TESEM (Observatory for Technologies and Maintenance Services of the Milan Polytechnic) has defined a scale from 1 to 5 to establish the GML, an index that defines the level of Maturity of a company in the field of Maintenance of processes and plants.

Maturity Level 5 o ML5 is the level at which processes are managed ensuring continuous improvement; at the ML1 level there is practically no control over the process.

There are different nuances between the two, but it is interesting to focus on the distribution of the sample companies (selected from various sectors to provide a complete overview): only 2% in Italy has reached the maximum level of Maturity against 16% in who does not carry out any type of activity in this regard.

In any case, 79% of companies in Italy are under ML4 and 37% have not even contemplated the Maintenance Engineering (IdM) job: in these cases, failure analysis is carried out occasionally, without standard procedures, without the use of indicators of reliability and performance.

is lifted fromObservatory another interesting point: they are really Companies with onerous processes for machinery (e.g. metalworker), which more would have to gain in implementing Asset Management Systems, to be more reluctant to use these technologies.

Management awareness in order to refine business practices in the maintenance field is the basis because, only if supported by the managerial spheres and integrated into the entire process, can technological innovation bring positive effects by making the "chain" more efficient.

Using a CMMS extension or ERP modules (Computerized Maintenance Management System) turns out to be a winning strategy, but at the same time Company maturity must grow: alternatively, the outsourcing of these services can take place in various ways but it is believed that knowledge of the plant is one of the most influential parameters from which it is difficult to ignore.

 

 

In conclusion, the TESEM observatory highlighted how in Italy the growth in the number of Asset Management projects is really too small compared to our European colleagues, especially in Northern Europe: that PREVENTIVE and PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE are the best source of investment to improve CONSOLIDATED PROCESSES is already clear to many.

  • Operational continuity of production processes not burdened by excessive and costly reserves/stocks,
    • Reduction of production losses due to accidental stops
    • Increased residual life of machine components,
    • Reduction of interventions not yet necessary,
    • Improvement of environmental factors (noise, pollution, energy consumption)
    • Reduction of maintenance costs compared to the periodic or fixed-term maintenance method.
