Digitization, connection and automation: the fourth industrial revolution it is now a reality in our country as well.

Machine technology, increasingly interconnected with that of corporate Information Technology systems, however risks being a very fast and often invisible vehicle for cyber threats. Manufacturing and process industries are thus increasingly exposed to cyber risks: in 2021 alone, attacks on companies in this sector grew by 11% globally, according to the latest Clusit Report1.

Clusit, the Italian Association for Information Security combines resources and skills with the main Italian associations in the world of Industry 4.0 and organizes with ANIE, ISPE and ANIPLA the second edition of Manufacturing Security Summit, the conference that adopts the in-depth analysis and dissemination approach of the traditional Security Summit, declining reflections and debates in the specific sector.

The appointment is for the 25 October at 10.00 in "hybrid" mode: it will in fact be possible to participate – free of charge – in presence at Milano Verticale | UNA Esperienze Hotel (via Via Carlo de Cristoforis, 6) and in streaming. The experts of the four Associations will discuss the specific experiences of the OT and IIoT world also with some representatives of manufacturing companies and suppliers of automation and control systems. Objective, to understand how to secure on-premise and Cloud systems in view of IT-OT convergence according to the provisions of Industry/Transition 4.0. We will talk about monitoring experiences of OT infrastructures with the use of Anomaly Detection tools that use AI and ML to identify possible problems and prevent accidents that may have an impact on machinery and plants in production, in industries as in utilities. At the Manufacturing Security Summit, the implementation of architectures with a Zero Trust approach in the ICS/SCADA environment will also be mentioned, as well as the methods of protecting IIoT systems with large numbers of connected devices.

Enzo Maria Tieghi, exponent of Scientific Committee of Clusit and referent for OT/IIoT Security, will lead the debate on the impact of cyber risk in factories and utilities, after a brief introduction on the most current threat trends, the architectures currently present on plants and what is evolving, following the dictates of Industria4.0 .5.0/XNUMX which sees a marked use of IoT/IIoT, Edge, Cloud.

Among the speakers, Lorenzo Ivaldi, UNIGE; Mario Testino, ISPE Italy Affiliate/Gamp Forum Italy – Cyber Security Working Group; Gilberto Rossi, Corporate Automation Manager of Fidia Farmaceutici; Julius Iucci, president of ANIE Security; Massimo Scanu, ABB, ANIPLA; Robert Motta, member of the Industrial Software Group, Anie Automazione; David Gubiani, Regional Director SE EMEA Southern & Israel, Check Point Software Technologies.

“The Security Summit appointment dedicated to the Manufacturing sector is renewed, with a specific focus on Cyber Security in the Operation Technologies (OT Security) sector. The contributions of the world of production will be in the foreground, with experiences in areas ranging from drugs to Smart Cities: very different universes, but with similar requirements in terms of protecting the physical world from ever-increasing IT risks. The debate that will follow on the most effective approach today to deal with them will be fundamental, in which experts from associations, industry, academics and vendors will be the protagonists”, says Enzo Maria Tieghi.

“The industrial world, under the pressure of Digitization and the challenges of Cybersecurity, today finds itself in a phase in which substantial changes are necessary that associations such as Clusit and ANIE can help to identify more clearly. It's time to take on a greater awareness that the costs related to cyber-crime events are not theoretical and have a potentially greater impact than any investment in cybersecurity. This Manufacturing-oriented Security Summit organized by Clusit aims to help raise awareness of the sector as a whole with respect to Cybersecurity to understand the risks to which production assets are exposed and often used to carry out attacks on other corporate networks , and what measures to adopt to make them safe”, declares Roberto Motta.

“All connected systems, even residual ones, are critical and sensitive, for this reason it is necessary to determine and classify new vulnerabilities,” says Iucci. “The incontrovertible fact remains: the transition to digital technologies is a priority to guarantee the competitiveness of our production, distribution and supply chains of products or services. The Clusit event allows the actors of this supply chain to discuss and plan common actions to face and overcome the challenges related to Digitization".

“Cyber Security is by now a central and common theme in the industrial panorama with different declinations according to the production reality; the protection of production assets from increasingly insidious cyber attacks is of strategic importance. Furthermore, the imminent approval of the new European NIS2 regulation on this issue poses new compliance challenges for manufacturing companies. Associative realities such as ANIPLA bring together the skills and experiences of different companies operating at different levels in the world of industrial automation through which it is possible to deepen the various aspects relating to Cyber Security in the OT with interesting ideas applicable to the various production realities ". says Massimo Scanu.

“ISPE, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, is the largest globally not-for-profit association for updating scientific, technical and regulatory progress in the Life Sciences. With its affiliate GAMP, specialized in computerized systems issues, it works for the technical and cultural growth of its members through forums, events, working groups and publications, we work to share ideas and practical experiences: in this context, the participation of the group GAMP/ISPE Cybersecurity work session at the CLUSIT event represents a unique opportunity for discussions with industry experts”, says Mario Testino.

Manufacturing Security Summit 2022 takes place during the European Cyber Security Month - ECSM (European Cyber Security Month), a European Union campaign promoted in Italy by Clusit with the European agency ENISA, which provides resources and events to increase the perception of cyber threats and provide up-to-date information on cyber protection.

The Conference is part of the "vertical" appointments dedicated by Clusit to the sectors with the greatest impact on the data and information security of companies and citizens. With the organization of Astrea, an agency specializing in the organization of live and digital business events in the world of IT security, Manufacturing Security Summit 2022 builds on the more than ten-year experience of Security Summit to create a space for in-depth analysis on cyber risks and need to manage them through a holistic approach with industry players.

Participation in Manufacturing Security Summit 2022 is free – upon registration on the Security Summit site – and allows you to acquire 3 CPE (Continuing Professional Education) credits valid for maintaining the CISSP, CSSP, CISA, CISM or similar certifications requiring continuing education.
