As also stated by numerous academics, Industry 4.0 is the term that indicates the new Industrial Revolution, i.e. the one closely linked to the Digital Transformation of machines, plants and production or process systems: the technologies that are enabling this epochal change of approach are the cloud and virtualization, as well as obviously the evolution of hardware devices and for displaying supervision and control screens, and the evolution of the high level of connectivity linked to the devices themselves but also to the new communication networks.
However, we hear more and more talk of 5.0 and this is because the adoption of the technologies just mentioned has in fact created new paradigms, allowing the creation of increasingly centralized (and complex) systems and the possibility of collecting uneven data and coming from different sources and finally to be able to correlate them to discover useful logics for the purpose of continuous improvement.
In practice, those who started the journey in DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION has discovered that it has an impressive amount of 'hidden' data, perhaps kept only for regulatory purposes or never really considered as real sources of information, which are adequately processed through advanced analytics they can give back fundamental notions to improve the quality of the product but also the efficiency of the architecture and of the production or service delivery system.
This whole process allows for profound reasoning from the point of view of sustainability and, in some virtuous cases, of the circular economy in order to contribute ethically to environmental protection by moving towards a production or service provision that has less impact on the environment and people.
